Gout is a rheumatic disease that is caused by uric acid crystals with is deposited in the tissues, with the joints being the most affected place. It is manifested by episodes of joint inflammation, commonly in the first toe (big toe). It usually has heat, pain and redness in the affected joint which makes it impossible to walk. This disease is self-limited and can recur, causing joint destruction, which is why treatment and follow-up by a rheumatologist is important for its control and management.
